My name is Ucan Conserve, but you can call me Ucan. Welcome to Kids Corner. I guess you are all interested in learning about water and how you can help to CONSERVE it? Well, you have come to the right place because you will find almost everything you need to know about water here. Are you ready to learn and have fun with water?

You should already know we all use water in many ways that include drinking, bathing, washing and watering our lawns and driveways. We are wasting water at higher rates and need to be smarter when it comes to using it. That is why it is important that we all find ways to conserve water every day in every way. We can play an important role in making sure that every drop counts and there are things you can do to help your family save water. If everyone plays a small part in saving water then together as a community we can save a lot.

Water Facts that You Should Know

  • 71% of the earth’s surface is covered by water. The remaining 29% of the earth’s surface is made up of mountains, deserts, plains and plateaus.
  • 97.5% of the earth’s water is salt water. The remaining 2.5% of the earth’s water is fresh water.
  • 68.7% of the earth’s fresh water is in the form of ice.

The Great Lakes As An Important Source of Freshwater

  • The Great Lakes system is the largest source of fresh water in the world. The system is made up of 5 lakes: Lake Ontario, Lake Erie, Lake Huron, Lake Superior and Lake Michigan.
  • Lake Superior is the largest freshwater lake in the world by surface area and is third largest by volume.

  • Did you know that showers and baths account for 35% of the water use in your home.
  • Flushing your toilet accounts for 30% of the water use in your home.
  • Doing laundry accounts for 20% of the water use in your home.

Water Conservation Tips

How can we help to conserve water?

Well the general rule for conserving water around the house is to reduce.

Ways to reduce in the kitchen are:

  • Reducing the amount of times you use the dishwasher by operating it only when it is full.
  • Reducing the amount of water used when washing dishes by filling the sink and turning off the tap.
  • Reducing the amount of dishes being used by reusing the dishes themselves.

Ways to reduce in the bathroom are:

  • Reducing the amount of water when brushing your teeth by not leaving the water running.
  • Reducing the amount of water when taking a bath by filling the tub half-way.
  • Reducing the amount of water when taking a shower by taking shorter showers.
  • Ask your parents to buy a 6 litre dual flush toilet off the city’s approved list of toilets, so they can apply to get $60 cash back.

Other ways to reduce water use:

  • Don’t use your toilet as a wastepaper basket.
  • If you run water for it to get hot or cold, don’t let that water go down the drain. Save it in a bucket to use later to water plants.
